Senior Manager – R&D Automation

Our client

At Wärtsilä ANCS (Automation, Navigation & Control Systems), we transform how vessels perform to create the safest and most efficient journey for our customers. We always have the vision of navigating towards a more sustainable maritime industry. With our rich history of pioneering maritime technologies, we have defined industry benchmarks. Our offering includes easy-to-operate integrated navigation and automation systems: sensors that enhance safety and situational awareness, and Dynamic Positioning (DP) systems.

ANCS provides Automation and Navigation Systems to the most sophisticated ships. The Platinum Navigation and Automation system is modular and offers efficient, safer, and compliant maneuvering. It provides unique flexibility, redundancy, and scalability paired with an intuitive user interface. It is a scalable solution for new builds and retrofits, from small installations to complex systems. Based on decades of experience delivering systems to merchant, cruise, and special vessels, it is one platform for all automation and navigation functionality.

Wärtsilä ANCS has a significant market share in complex automation systems for large cruise vessels. Less complex merchant vessels and the naval segment are also growing markets.

Today, Wärtsilä ANCS has a strong team of 650 employees in over 10 countries worldwide, with the right skills, experience, and winning attitude. 65 employees are based in Hørsholm.

To support Wärtsilä ANCS on its journey, we are looking for a Senior Manager to strengthen the automation R&D department in Hørsholm. Our Automation R&D team is based in Hørsholm but is part of an international R&D setup.

The role

As Senior Manager R&D Automation you will lead the development of the technology of our industry-leading ship automation system (offering alarm, monitoring and control abilities to e.g. the vessel’s bridge and engine control rooms). Your expertise will guide the teams around hardware, embedded software, and PC-based software, ensuring that our products meet the highest quality, reliability, and innovation standards.
You will work closely with internal stakeholders from Product Management, Navigation R&D, Service and (Field) Engineering. Our Automation R&D team is part of an international organizational R&D setup.

You will work on our current platform while adopting emerging technologies, including simulation enhancements, better remote connections, and IoT Edge technology. The system is currently being augmented through modules built on cloud technology. Key improvement areas include upgrading remote maintenance access and diagnostics services, updating the tech infrastructure with new features, improving the embedded software, and renewing the system’s core architecture. Cybersecurity is an ongoing priority, aiming for full regulatory compliance by mid-2024. Initially handled by consultants, we are now shifting to internalize cybersecurity expertise.

As the Senior Manager of R&D Automation, you are tasked with cultivating a culture of curiosity and exploration, emphasizing the importance of understanding challenges and user needs for continued success. Your role involves guiding the Automation R&D team toward embracing possibilities, fostering continuous learning, and driving improvement by deeply understanding present and future demands.
