Product Owner - NACOS Marine A/S

Product Owner - NACOS Marine A/S

Our client

NACOS Marine is a globally integrated group of companies at the forefront of maritime automation, navigation, and control systems. Building on decades of expertise and a heritage of trusted solutions, NACOS Marine continues to pioneer technologies that set the standard for safer, smarter, and more efficient ship operations worldwide.

With over 500 employees worldwide and a strong presence in Denmark through NACOS Lyngsø Marine A/S, the company combines decades of experience with renewed investment and strategic focus.

Based in Hørsholm and employing approximately 80 specialists, NACOS Lyngsø Marine plays a central role in developing future-ready solutions for safer and smarter ship operations.

To support us on our R&D journey, we are introducing a new position: Product Owner. This role comes at a time when Lyngsø’s strong heritage in ship automation is being combined with NACOS Marine’s focus on delivering modern, integrated solutions for the maritime industry.

The role

The role involves clear ownership of the system and software layers related to the Platinum platform. It covers Windows- and Linux-based solutions, databases, virtualization, deployment, integration, and overall system coherence. Embedded software may be included, but is not the primary focus.

The position translates input from product management, contracts, and customers into technical priorities, assesses complexity, effort, and risk, and rejects solutions that compromise architecture, maintainability, or long-term quality. Close collaboration with architects and technical leads is required, along with an understanding of the full delivery chain from development and testing through release, deployment, commissioning, and operation. A key responsibility is to develop and maintain a technology roadmap as a practical steering tool, clearly defining what is delivered, when, why, and at what cost, and supporting business cases and management-level decisions.

Acting as the technical counterweight to Product Management, you ensure that short-term commercial or contractual needs do not compromise long-term system quality, architecture, or sustainability, while supporting structured R&D processes that enable maintainability and future development.

You will be part of the Automation R&D team in Hørsholm and collaborate closely with stakeholders across NACOS Marine, including Product Management, Navigation R&D, Service, and Field Engineering. The role does not include responsibility for planning, budgeting, resourcing, or competence development.

The System Product Owner operates within a matrix organisation, with delivery and execution accountability aligned with the Programme Manager and a functional reporting line to R&D Manager Christoffer Schrøder. The role works in close collaboration with R&D Manager Thomas Junker, Product Management, R&D, Test, Service, and Field Engineering across the NACOS Marine organisation.

Responsibilities:

  • Actively contribute to NACOS Marine’s R&D strategy by acting as guardian of the system architecture and technical integrity of the NACOS Automation portfolio.
  • Own and operate an effective Product Owner process across stakeholders, ensuring structured handling of requirements from scoping through development, testing, deployment, and commissioning.
  • Translate product, contract, and user requirements into clear technical priorities, including effort, cost, risk, and trade-offs, in close collaboration with Product Management, architects, and technical leads.
  • Ensure alignment between requirements, testing, and quality by working closely with the test manager to define clear, testable outcomes.
  • Actively shape and own or co-own a future-ready technological roadmap, including sequencing, prioritisation, and transparency on cost and consequences.
  • Protect long-term scalability, reliability, and maintainability by challenging or rejecting solutions that compromise architecture or create unsustainable technical debt.
  • Actively manage legacy systems by defining what can be changed, isolated, or must remain untouched, balancing progress with stability.
  • Provide input to internal roadmaps for technology and competence development, ensuring the development organisation has clarity on priorities and direction.

Profile

This is a senior role requiring experience with complex systems and long product lifecycles. It. You must be able to work persistently over time, handle resistance, and navigate environments with significant technical legacy and regulatory constraints.
The role requires comfort with the fact that not everything can be modernised quickly, and that technical debt must be managed rather than eliminated, as we are dealing with critical infrastructure.

Ideally, you are motivated by ownership of the product as a whole and naturally identify with the product itself rather than with processes or titles.

Hard skills

  • Product Owner experience or similar roles in technically complex, system-oriented environments.
  • Experience working with complex system products combining software, hardware, and deployment.
  • Strong understanding of system-level architecture, legacy systems, integration, and long product lifecycles.
  • Experience with PC-based software, system integration, deployment, and commissioning in non-cloud-centric environments.
  • Ability to assess and communicate technical consequences, cost, risk, and architectural trade-offs.
  • Proven experience with structured development processes, governance, and decision frameworks.
  • Experience collaborating closely with architects, developers, testers, and Product Management.
  • Preferably experience from OT or other regulated, system-critical environments.
  • Experience in a comparable system, technical ownership, or senior delivery roles.

Soft skills

  • Trustworthy, pragmatic, and quality-driven – friendly, yet firm when needed.
  • Able to stand firm under pressure and challenge solutions that compromise long-term integrity.
  • Comfortable driving change in environments with resistance, legacy, and ambiguity.
  • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills across technical and commercial stakeholders.
  • Process-oriented, structured, and disciplined in execution.
  • Mentally robust and patient, with the resilience to drive long-term transformation.
  • Motivated by ownership of the product as a whole and taking responsibility for its long-term integrity.
